Apple Gingham Stitch

NOTE: This pattern for your personal use only

This was taken as closely as possible, from an older apron. There is a repeat of apples with just a few cross stitches between. An elderly aunt showed me an older apron of hers, it had an apple in chicken scratch..and was beautiful..however,that one I didn't have time to graph.

Gingham Stitch Dresser Scarf

These are a few more table runners and dresser scarves in my collection. As you can see from these photos and those of my aprons, I tend to search out the gingham stitch and chicken scratch embroidery, it's my absolute favorite, tho I do love all the older embroidered linens..and of course, my aprons.
I've not yet taken time, to draw off these older patterns, but if you click on the photo, it will enlarge so the pattern can be more easily seen....

Needlecase and Scissors Holder

This needlecase and scissors holder was one of those "look at something in a different way" things. I had a stack of potholders that I had bought at a closeout sale...(they were 2 for 25 cents)..and I just knew I could do something with them.... this was the project...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Materials:
Potholders
Lace to go around 2 potholders
a small sewing snap
Thread...
* * * * *
First...I cut the hanging loop off..., folded in half and pressed down to make a good fold line, then added lace all around. For the needlecase, I cut some small pieces of felt and stitched them on.. and added a snap to close with... For the scissors holder..fold and press into shape, adding lace all around, and bringing the two corners up to form the holder. Stitch in place...
and you're all done.
****Note...
I belive I remember these patterns (and the ones similar to these) best of all, and with the very best memories.
There was several ladies in my mothers and grandmothers groups, not only for get togethers, but in quilting groups, crochet friends..and church circles. They traded stories of their lives, their children..they traded patterns..they quilted and crocheted..and set up booths for fund-raisers...,and somehow managed to keep a sparkling clean house and cook up the best food immaginable.
...the days my friends and I looked forward to was coming home..to the smell of yeast raised doughnuts rising..almost ready to cook, or to homemade fried pies, the likes of which I've not had since. On those days my mother had so many kids in her house, that as she said, she couldn't shake a stick without hitting a child, and she was right.
did I mention that this very group of ladies helped to build a beautiful new church,..and all their money came about with their quilt raffles, food and craft booths.
how I miss those days...but mostely,...I miss mama, granny and the ladies..
RicRac & Cross Stitch Embroidery Apron
Tho it has a stain that so far, seems to be immovalble...it is one of my favorite aprons. It's just dainty and delicate looking.., with much work being done on it. I'm not sure what others call the embroidery over the ric rac..I call it just that, but I'm sure it has a proper name..
Gingham Stitch Dresser Scarf
A long dresser scarf...it's a soft aqua blue gingham and the pink stitching looks pretty.
Patch Quilt
One of the prettier scrap quilts...I love them...
Fan Quilt
This pattern in at the very top of my 10 most favorite quilt patterns....
and tho I haven't time to try and do another quilt, I have discovered something that's much quicker. Potholders !!!!
I'm sure most of you has already thought of that, but it was a "flash" for me..lol Since potholders is also a collectable for me...I have begun to gather small bits of fabric for just such projects. Well, for potholders..and maybe a Grandmothers Flower Garden...or maybe a Log Cabin..or Rail Fence..or..or..or........
there is never time to do all I want to do...
Green and White Windmill Quilt
This pattern comes from the
Quilts..Modern and Colonial
I've looked and looked, but can find no date on the book, I do know however, that it has some of the prettiest patterns. Most are a bit advanced for me.., but I can always look at them.
Sunbonnet Sue Apron
And here....is my favorite pattern of them all. ....this is one of the several Sue aprons I have..
Whether it be a quilt, potholders, crochet, chicken scratch / gingham stitch, tin punch, needlecases, pincushions...etc...Sue is number one.
Gingham Cross Stitch
NOTE: This pattern for your personal use only !!
This is an older cross stitch apron, the work has been beautifully done. I believe it's a pattern of the stitcher....because of all the patterns I have..this one I've not seen. I really like this one..it is one of the prettier aprons in my collection..
Cross Stitch Gingham General Instructions
** Note:
The general directions/instructs to follow are the basics. This is what most of the instructions call for... however, it's not exactly the way I do. Call me a free spirit..but in crafting, sewing or gingham stitch/chicken scratch..I sorta do what pleases me. Apparently, "back in the day" when all the rage was cross stitch/chicken scratch, and it was being embroidered on everything that didn't move away...those ladies were free spirits as well. I have aprons with chicken scratch...and gingham cross stitch..with the thread count to suit them..some of the patterns are beautiful..some simple, some intricate. In my collection of aprons, table cloths, dresser and table scarves, I have a few spread out, hopefully, I can chart some of the old patterns......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
General Directions:
The strands of thread will be in relation to the squares of gingham.
If using gingham with with 6 and under...use 4 strands
larger squares will need all 6 strands

Materials:
embroidery hoop
# 5 embroidery needle..(it's what I use )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To plan how large each motif will be, count the number of crosses in the longest line,...then count the squares, both white and colored of the gingham. You can then, run a basting thread around the area....or plan the size with pins.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Complete each square as you work along, just be sure that all the first stitches of each cross are slanted in the same direction..for a beautiful design.
Foe best effect, keep colors in darker shades than the color of the gingham. If you choose, you can use several colors...or work the whole design in silhouette.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Banding can be repeated to any length across an apron..or a scarf. Bandings with flower motifs can be made, by simply repeating the motif. They can also be used on corners..of table linens, scarves...etc.
Cross Stitch For Gingham Pattern
NOTE: This pattern for your personal use only !!
This is taken from some old patterns. I don't know the dates for certain, and I don't know why they were cut..maybe the reason was to share them.. there was an edging pattern as well in the package..along with a few others..
