Vintage Kitchen Things That I wish Were MIne .... Vintage Things Thursday

It's that most wonderful day of the week again..Vintage Things Thursday. To see all the wonderful things we all collect, or in the process of searching for..or just hoping to stumble across such a wonderful find at a thrift or antique shop.
Click on Suzanne at ColoradoLady to see all the pretty things.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Down below....are some vintage kitchen tools that I wish were mine.
The old strainers..those I remember well. They were not only used for straining tea..but also as a makeshift flour sifter if the need arose. The old can openers I don't know how anyone made them work. I have difficulty with the ones that are todays models.
And last..but certainly not least is this wonderful canister.I just somehow know this has my name written on the bottom. I love the vegetable graphics..they're so bright and pretty.I wonder..how much flour has been scooped outta that canister????
You know, if anyone had told our mothers or grandmothers that there would be a day, when women actually collected their kitchen utensils,canisters, bread pans..etc, can you imaging them laughing. We collect their ironing boards, their irons..wash tubs..crocks and canning jars..we collect feed and flour sacks, quilts,samplers..linens..crochet...we collect embroidered tea towels, dresser scarves...and the list goes on and on.. I can just hear my mother.."You're gonna hang what on the wall?????? That thing is rusty..throw it away. :). And yet, to remember those past times,those sweet times..the times when the world was a gentler place and we were young and safe...that's why we collect. To remember and to honor our past. To pay tribute to the ones that came before us..and to hopefully pass along some of the past to the ones that will follow us. And in doing so, we each touch the fingers and hold hands with the women and men that made us who we are. We touch the past and pray for the future. We collect and save memories...
  2. My 84 year old mother can't believe the things I collect, or how expensive the things that she had in the past are at antique stores! It's all tied up in memories. Memories of the things that Grandma or Mom used. And our grandchildren will have fond memories of the things that we used too!
    Happy VTT!
  6. Oh my what a very beautiful post. And you are so right. Firstly that our mothers would laugh. They wanted the new things. And secondly that we do embrace the simpler times. Thanks for sharing today :-)
  9. My dad had a can opener almost like the one you show- he could whip open a can in no time at all with that contraption!
    I love the old bread pans with the pretty little embossing on them!
  12. My Mom (86 years old) thinks I am crazy when I go through her kitchen and grab her old kitchen stuff. She thinks they are all junk until she comes to my house and sees how I display them. I went through them all and taped little notes on them that say who they are from and from what year and any cute stories about them. I do this for my children and grandchildren one day.
  15. I totally agree about collecting to bring back memories, and holding on to things to honor the past. My mom is still using that same strainer today, and my sister has a big collection of vintage kitchen implements.
  16. Hi CC..So glad to see you here on VTT. It's my FIRST time and aren't there some wonderful Collections and Collectors? I think this GRIT will fit in great! I love the way you expressed the 'Collectors Creed' in this post and the thoughts we all have about our Moms and GrandMothers old stuff. Precious memories! My Mama enjoys my collections, but is glad it's cluttering my house and not hers:) Hope to see ya on CITexas today...got more HeadVases to show!
  17. I'm pretty sure my grandmother would have been amused at my obsession with her old dishes. I'm pretty sure she was more than happy to throw them all out whenever "Corningwear" and plastic plates were invented. And what I would give to have all of her old castaways!
  18. LOL I still use a strainer-very like the one in the picture-for sifting flour (the other kind always gunks up on me after one washing!)
    I love those crazy can openers too-I should post a pix of what I use, you'd think "how does that work" about mine too. :)
    I think that we collect what we remember...even if its dimly.
  19. You're right they would probably not believe how we are collecting all of their stuff now. At least they had stuff that lasted 'til now. I sometimes wonder how many antiques there will be later with all of the cheap stuff we put out now. LOL Ok that wasn't nice but kinda true!
    I agree about those old can openers, some of them I can't get to work for anything.
  28. I love old kitchen stuff--so far I've refrained from collecting most of it, but it's sorely tempting!
  30. Hello CC, I loved reading your text about collecting. You are right on. It is our 'touch' to our past. In the photo I was wearing the sweetest silver egg that had been my mom's. When I put it on that day I told my sister I was bringing mom to the show and kissed the egg. She laughed and understood exactly how I felt. Our mom would have loved being there with us.
    I love the kitchen items you shared. And... I remember most of them. The canister graphics are awesome.
    I want to have your address because I am sending you that spider crochet item you liked so much. My email is on my blog. It will be my pleasure to give it to you. Otherwise the local thrift shop will be getting it. I loved your story about helping your mom crochet that pattern.
    I am waiting to hear from you CC.
    Hugs, Jeanne
  31. I know what you mean - if only I'd known how much I would treasure these things, but I guess that's what makes them so special.
  32. Oh CC sweetie...
    I love this post.
    I do have one or maybe two of these strainers, a can opener, and I have not only one of the canisters, but also one of the old cake carriers with the metal holder piece around it. I love old things. Like you said it entwines our fingers into those of the past, the ones who baked before us and gave us our starts. Recipes that have been handed down from year to year, some centuries I am sure.
    Thank you for reminding me. I love it when you share with me.
    Country hugs sweetie and so much love, Sherry
