Farm Girls Sunbonnet Sue and Hannah, Counting Eggs..... Watkins Old Fashioned Pound Cake

Sue and her best friend,Hannah........have been very busy. They have fed all the chicks and their mamas and then went out to search for eggs. They looked in the tall grass where 2 of the speckled hen liked to lay their eggs and found some. Next...on to the barn to look in the hay. Some of the girls favorite hen friends liked to lay eggs in the soft hay, so the girls always find eggs there. Now, on to the house where the chickens live at night... and guess what??? More eggs were there. The two girls were very, very happy cause Mother had promised to make a cake for supper if they could find enough eggs. So the girls were looking very hard ... They were very careful and hurried to count the eggs when their little bucket was filled and guess what??? There was enough to make the cake.
Now, all their chores was done..they could go play... Away they went, to get their dolls and go out by the big swing under the shade tree. There was mud pies to make and all sorts of things. Would you like to play ?? Come on.. While everyone is playing, Mother is in the kitchen... all dressed in her pretty apron, busily measuring all the the cake ingredients. And getting some sugar on the strawberries so they will make some syrup to top the cake....and making sure the cream is very well chilled so she can make whipped cream for the top. Yummmmmmmm
Here is the cake Mother is making for the girls.....
It's...............

Watkins Old Fashioned Pound Cake
1 pound ( 4 1/4 cups ) sifted cake flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon Watkins nutmeg

1 pound sugar (that equals 2 1/2 cups)
1 pound eggs (that equals 6 to 8)
1/2 teaspoon Watkins Almond extract
1 teaspoon Watkins vanilla

Sift flour once, measure and resift twice with the salt and nutmeg. Cream the butter and add the sugar gradually..cream together until very light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after eack addition. Add sifted dry ingredients gradually, beating until smooth after each addition. Add flavoring and blend. Pour batter into greased and paper lined loaf pans about 9 x 5 x 3" in size..and bake in a 325 degree F. oven about 1 hour or until done.

  2. I loved your story with the bonnet girls. Last year I acquired some chickens and love to watch them. Not real good at gathering the egg! LOL
This particular pattern is so sweet. Ruby
